Pack Visit to Bell Ringing at Hanslope Church
After a shortened Pack Meeting we left the Headquarters at 7.0 p.m. to walk to the Church. We entered the Tower and climbed the steep winding stairs to the Ringing Room. Here we met Mr. Roy Keeves, the leader of the Ringers, who explained to the Cub Scouts about the art of bell ringing and its history.
Mr. Keeves had prepared one of the bells so that we could see it being rung from the Bell Room. We all climbed the steps and entered another room when the clock mechanism was housed and from this room small parties ascended further up the tower to the Bell Room. From a vantage point just inside the doorway we watched the large bell being rung.
We all returned to the ringing room where the bell ringers had gathered. Being careful not to talk (well nearly) or hinder the ringers we watched the team practice on the eight bells.
Thanking Mr. Keeves we made our way down to the foot of the Tower and after the Leaders had given out notices we departed for home at 8.0 p.m. It had been an exciting and interesting visit although the Leaders had headaches, no not from the noise, but trying to stop the Cubs touching the ringing ropes and marshalling 23 cubs on the stairs.
