1st Hanslope Pack - winners Milton Keynes North District Cub Scouts Sports

Milton Keynes North District Cub Scout Sports

at Bushfield School Wolverton at 6.30 p.m.

This year’s Sports were to be held on Wed July 6th but because of the bad weather were postponed to the following Wednesday. It had been decided by the District to alter the Sports from the usual weekend to an evening but its success would only be achieved if it started on time and the races were organised as smoothly as possible with the help of adults.

We assembled at 5.30 p.m. at the Headquarters so that the team could have their final pep talk and to ensure we arrived well before 6.30 p.m. so that we could prepare ourselves for the effort we all knew must be given if we were to retain the shield.

Changes were made to the usual format with a few new races included and only points would be awarded in the finals of each race.

Thus with parents supporting our lads and the Leaders organising the Cub Scouts so that they were ready for their race in good time and mentally prepared we began the competition against 11 other Packs from the District. The team responded well to the encouragement and in every race where heats took place we managed to put a lad through to the Finals and in most cases gained some points to the overall total.

The highlight for the 1st Hanslope supporters was to see our wheelbarrow pair in the over 9½ yrs completely overwhelm the opposition as the wheelbarrow seldom touched the ground, although it must be said remarks were made by others watching.

The A.D.C. Paul Swannell then announced the first four placings in reverse order 4th 1st Wolverton Timbers 12pts, 3rd 1st Wolverton Prairies 18pts, 2nd Stantonwood 10pts and in First Place 1st Hanslope with 31 pts. Once again we had demolished the opposition to retain the shield for the eighth year running.

The team, families and Leaders were once again delighted in the achievement and we all returned to Hanslope in the knowledge that the lads had really done their best to keep the outstanding record achieved since 1981.
