William was wounded during the war and it was while recovering at a hospital in London, that he met and married Alice King November 3rd 1917 at St. Andrew, Catford. When their first daughter was born, William wrote home from France saying to call her Marcelle, in the hope his family would guess he was in Marseille, France.

After the war he returned home to Castlethorpe where he farmed until his death in 1952
