The bells of St Marys are very old. One bell, which was recast in 1906, was inscribed in Gothic capitals, Ave Maria Gratia Plena.
This translates as, Hail Mary full of grace. Happily, this inscription was renewed when the bell was recast.
John Baker recorded that the oldest of the original four bells was inscribed, also in Gothic capitals, IN MULTIS ANNIS RESONET CAMPANA JOHANNIS. KF Plummer translates this as, For many years may the bell John sound out. The inscription was not renewed when the bell was recast.
Baker noted that the two smallest bells bear date in 1624 and Plummer records that they are inscribed, God Save our King. In 1948 the bells were re-hung and a treble bell, dedicated to those in the parish who served in the Second Great War, was added to the four then there.
The bell tower displays three plaques commemorating important peals.
