15. The Roof

The church is situated in a commanding position and provides extensive views across the Tove valley to the north and east. The two views here are to the north and show a mixture of pasture and arable land.

From the belfry, access to the tower is by vertical ladder and a small doorway leading to the roof. In the description by John Bridges, “At the west end is an embattled tower, with a pyramid upon it covered also with lead”.

Substantial timbers form the framework of this pyramid.

Evidence of work being carried out on the roof is provided by numerous markings in the lead. The dates 1692, 1743 and 1744 are clearly visible in the ‘footprints’ shown here.
