Tyringham with Filgrave
transcribed by Ingrid Neale January 1894 Tyringham with Filgrave On the day of Intercession, December 3, we had the advantage of a sermon from the Rev. J.B. Maul, whose practical knowledge of Queensland made his remarks very interesting, accompanied as they were be a stirring appeal in support of the work of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel. The morning offertory was a trifle under £3, which was not quite made up to guineas at the School Evening Service. This, however, has not been the only contribution to the Society, in the course of the year, so that the total remitted has been rather more than usual, amounting in all to £4 15s. The Squire set the example thought he was not the only one in the field, and as his marriage with Miss. Loftus took place in London, at S. Paul’s, Knightsbridge we had only an echo of the proceedings but a very pleasant and substantial one in the form of an entertainment to the villagers and workpeople, on the estate, who assembled at Tyringham, and after a hearty tea and supper, enjoyed dancing and other amusements, which will fix the event in the memory of the young people. The marriage is the most interesting from the fact that the family of the bride having resided for several years at Tyringham. She is almost as well known as the Squire, and there is that about both of them which is sure to make them beloved, whenever they come to dwell among us. It was a welcome sound when the fine old peal of bells rang out, as they have done for many such occasions in the history of the ancient house of Tyringham. The two other weddings of Henry Fowler with Mary Tompkins, and Edward Knight with Elizabeth Eaton, on Easter Monday and Easter Tuesday, were bright and happy. May the Easter sun which shone so brightly on all there, be a token of many blessings to come. Our evening continuation School was closed by two examinations, the result of which remains to be seen. Eight lads who kept up their attendance with much regularity deserve praise for thus aiming at self improvement, after their hard work in the day time. - Mr. Collett, the energetic schoolmaster of Sherington did his best for them, and was most persevering in his efforts to give them useful instructions. Howitt, one of Her Majesty’s Inspectors for Evening Schools. The report is now to hand, and reflects great credit on the Master, Mr. Frank Collett, of Sherington. It reads thus - “The Evening Continuation School is in very good order, and is doing most useful work in the elementary subjects. The highest grant was earned for each subject taken.” The boys should be grateful to the Rev. J. Tarver for the great interest he showed in the work of the Session, and for his encouraging remarks when he visited the class, which he rarely failed to do on each evening the School was opened. The lads who were specially attentive to the inspection given were: - George Eaton, Frank Eaton, Charles Miller, Charles Yakes, and Albert Sheppard. All lads making a suitable numbers of attendances to receive back their fees.
