'H Shape'

'H-Shape' – from the point of view of ‘learning’, a major feature was the shape. As discussed in the ‘current design’ section, Brand suggests that a square is the optimal shape.

Here, although the archives have been destroyed so no definitive evidence of what the architects intended is available, it would seem - from an interview with the original architect - that the ‘H-shape’ was intended to allow maximum light in without loss of privacy; where the first timber-framed design had glass walls. It succeeds in this, but – as is shown in the other section – this also turns out to be an ideal ‘learning’ shape in the UK planning environment.
