CURRENT IMPLEMENTATION OF THE

BASIC DESIGN

(to see the details of the extended designs please click here)

Thirty five years on, the basic design – which is still to be seen in a handful of the bungalows – has stood the test of time. Thus, for those which have not been substantially modified, the design still works well and the structure has not deteriorated to any significant extent. The bricks may have weathered to a rather less attractive grey, though much of this is now hidden by the prolific planting which has covered them. The solidity of the walls remains though.

Surprisingly, in view of the reputation they have gained elsewhere, even the flat roofs are largely holding their own, with more than half the bungalows still boasting these.

The original wooden windows have, as might be expected, long since rotted and have been replaced with double glazing. But even that works well, where for once white UPVC as well as being very practical fits into the surroundings – and even the ubiquitous patio doors do not seem unduly out of place.

Above all, the planting – in all the nooks and crannies between the buildings and around them – has softened the outlines and added character.

In particular, the growth of the many mature trees along the road and on the mound facing the bungalows has rendered even the frontage ‘picturesque’.
