EXTENDED DESIGNS

Stewart Brand suggests that the ideal shape for ‘buildings which learn’ is a square. According to him this is best because extensions can easily be added to the straight walls on all four sides. On the other hand, the miniscule ‘detachment’, often just a few feet, in the UK typically rules out expansion on two sides. Equally, the UK planning rules – especially the one which usually forbids development beyond the front building line - mean that another side disappears; and all that remains is the rear, to be blighted by kitchen extensions and conservatories.

The bungalows on Marshworth could not be farther from Brand’s ideal! Their ‘H-shape’, though, effectively offers up to 8 sides for expansion; even after allowing for the most stringent UK planning laws. Largely as a result, there appear to have been more, and individually larger, extensions than usual on the whole range of bungalows.

With more land available, those at the southern edge have been the more adventurous in colonizing the frontage. It is, however, not clear whether this is due to the larger curtilage, or the inspired layout, or more freedom being allowed by the planners; where the building line is tight at the northern end but more diffuse at the southern end.
