Trail Point 2. Grafton School

Grafton School

A view of Grafton School dated June 10th 1878, though the eye is caught by the foreground activity. Discarding their clothes into a heap on the ground, a group of children swim in a pond in the middle of a field, while the nearby sheep remain oblivious to the children's play and presumably the excited noise. The painting is a keen reminder of the days (not all that long ago) when children were left to find their own amusement among the fields and hedgerows, and adults were far less sensitised to issues of health and safety.

The two buildings shown here are the school (left) and Manor Cottages.
