This view, dated July 1878, shows the back of the cottages which lined the western side of the main road through Grafton. None of them now survive - most were pulled down as part of a road widening scheme in 1955. The gap in the fence gives an idea of a typical "close" : one of those pieces of land "enclosed" or closed off from the common fields, and usually found behind cottages in a village.
