Trail Point 3. Northampton Road Cottages

Part of Grafton village

This view, dated July 1878, shows the back of the cottages which lined the western side of the main road through Grafton. None of them now survive - most were pulled down as part of a road widening scheme in 1955. The gap in the fence gives an idea of a typical "close" : one of those pieces of land "enclosed" or closed off from the common fields, and usually found behind cottages in a village.
