This painting is titled "Mr Roper's Field" and is dated October 10th 1876. It shows the south-western aspect of the village : in the background behind the hedge the road from Stony Stratford rises up the hill to the first houses of Grafton. It offers another image of the rural idyll : in the evening with the shadows lengthening, a boy stretches full length on the grass to drink from a pond in the foreground, while in the middle distance a young couple meet on the fork of the paths to the village, as if keeping some kind of tryst.
