Stoke Goldington Millennium Wall Hanging

The Borders

Local Society Logos

Whilst we continued working in the fields, we were attaching the lozenges in the borders as they were completed, and at the same time adding the symbols to represent 14 local village societies along the curved edge at the bottom.

These symbols were sewn in DMC stranded cotton with a chain stitch border in wool.

Some groups had obvious symbols, such as the Scouts and Mothers Union, whilst others gave us their own idea to represent their society. For instance, the Gardeners Club have a wheelbarrow, whilst the Bridge group, ...surprise, surprise, have playing cards.

From the left above, the symbols represent the Community Awards for All symbol (who gave us the Grant), the Bowls Group (these are just out of the photo!), the Bridge Group, the Cricket Club, the Gate Group Amateur Dramatic Society, the Gardeners Club, the Golf Group, the Mothers Union, the Mums and Toddlers Group, the Pre-School Playgroup.

At the centre of the bottom border, is the Village Sign with an M on each side for year 2000.

Village Sign

On the right of the Village Sign, the symbols represent the Ramblers, the Scouts, the Stoke Goldington Millennium Stitchers, the Thursday Club, the Stoke Association and finally the Millennium Awards for All symbol under whose umbrella the Community Awards for All grants are made.
