FROM THE CONTEMPORARY LOCAL NEWSPAPERS OF NORTH BUCKS (BUCKS STANDARD, NORTH BUCKS TIMES, WOLVERTON EXPRESS)
With today’s internet a wealth of official information is available regarding those who served.
In an age before local radio and television, families often allowed letters to be published in the local press from their loved ones on active service.
However, for their descendants the letters reveal a more personal aspect, graphically describing the experience of the people and providing an insight into their personalities.

NBT 1915 Sep. 28th Tue.

Mr. Oliver Lester, of Home Farm, has received the sad news that his son, Trooper Sidney John Viccars Lester, was killed in action on August 2th (sic) in the Dardanelles. Aged 23 and single, he was the second son, and on the outbreak of the war joined the second regiment of the Royal Bucks Hussars. Drafted into the first regiment, he proceeded to Egypt, and from there to the Dardanelles. He went through the heroic attack on Chocolate Hill, and was killed at a later date. The sincerest sympathy is felt for the parents and family, and especially for the youngest son, who, having joined the regiment at the same time, is now in the Dardanelles. Mr. Lester has received the following letter from Lieutenant Evelyn de Rothschild;

“Dear Mr. Lester, - I am sorry to have to tell you that your son was killed yesterday. His brother was with him when he died, and has, I am sure, written to you. He was not in my squadron before, but the sergeants tell me how well your boys have done, and the grief at his loss amongst all his comrades showed me how much liked he had been. I sympathise with you deeply in your loss.”
