The Hermitage

The Hermitage in Grafton Regis is the place where we believe Elizabeth Woodville married Edward IV in secret on May 1st 1464. This marriage was to change not only the history of Grafton but the history of the country.

Five hundred years after the marriage of Elizabeth and Edward, when work commenced in 1963 to level a mound of rubble in a field near the A508, the foundations of the Hermitage were discovered and excavated.

The following documents detail how the Hermitage was found, the excavation that followed and plans of the excavation.
