Petition 1836

Petition to the Bishop of Lincoln.
This is a statement from the Rev'd John Risley, last parson of Thornton, who obviously had a look at the Parsonage at Thornton, and decided that he did not want to live there because it was rather small for his family and the building was not in a good state of repair. (The Parsonage was destroyed to make way for the new road at some time between 1853-7)

Letter from the Rev’d John Risley (last parson of Thornton) to the Bishop of Lincoln Ref the Parsonage was unfit to life in, and his license expires 31st October 1836 (the letter was sent from Tingewick dated January 5th 1837 saying he would keep the Parsonage in good repair) He would carry out the duties at Thornton from Tingewick. Value of the living in 1837 was £151/10/0 from tithes Glebe £1/10/0 Land tax £10/3/0
