SGA Archives (1)

From its creation in 1987, the Stoke Goldington Association has collected a large Archive of documents and photographs, These are housed in over 250 folders in  purpose-built storage areas in the Reading Rooms in the High Street (shown below with Derek George, one of the original founders.)

The Archives (since expanded)

 

The 3 main sections are:

A) CHRONICLES – Assorted material filed in date order, covering notable events & activities in the village and local area, from earliest times to the present day.

  • Pre History – Geology,  Local Archaeological finds, eg Romano British artefacts; Gorefields Monastic Abbey
  • Mediaeval – legal documents and histories
  • 1650 – 1900 – Law reports, Coaching and Farming, Land sales etc
  • 20th Century – Social events , War Service & memorials, Royal celebrations
  • Events/Fetes/Fund Raising
  • Pantomimes
  • Parish Council
  • Steam Rallies
  • Royal Jubilees
  • Best Kept Village success

 

B) DOMESDAY – Files for nearly every property and building in the parish with, where available, details of construction with large numbers of photographs. Estate agents marketing details  where houses have come on to the market for sale.

The files hold details of historical owners, sales and major works including extensions, with many photographs.

The records are arranged in several sets –

  • on the WEST side from Town End Crescent, up the High Street  to the Church and Purse Lane – the B526 road towards Northampton
  • on the EAST side from Springbank and Mount Pleasant down the High Street to the Village Hall  and the road to Olney – the B526 towards Newport Pagnell
  • Eakley, a distant northern part of the Parish near the County boundary
  • Gayhurst mansion and village

  • Gayhurst Papers :- Made available by The Trustees of the late Lady Carlile, which includes a set of 29 full plate photographs taken in 1893, various Wills, Letters of Appointment, Family papers and newspaper cuttings.

C ) VILLAGE PEOPLE 

Individual files for many inhabitants where either photographs or family history is available. Some files have comprehensive details of family histories  – others contain the odd photograph or two.  PLUS Census (1841-1901) and  Electoral details and recollections by older villagers

  12. The Christopher George Photograph Portfolio :- A large collection of black & white and colour photographs of Stoke Goldington (taken by the picture editor of The Guernsey Press, the son of Derek George)

  4. Church papers, including details of the Rectors, Churchyard Memorials, Bells and bell ringers and the Baptist Chapel. There is almost a complete collection of the various Parish Newsletters filed
  5. TransportCoaching Routes and Inns, Wesley’s Motor Coaches, Garages (Springbank & Gardener & White)
  6. Rural life Making a Living, Village Appraisals; Water supply/Flooding,  Footpaths, , Wind Farm Plans.
  7. Law & Order – Details of the Policemen who lived in SG and Newspaper reports of Poaching and other wrong-doing by locals. We also hold the records of the Parish Council
  8. Gayhurst – The history and development of The Mansion, Church and Parish
  9. Maps & Plans showing topographical changes and alterations to the landscape and buildings over the years.

Stoke Goldington (including Eakley) and Gayhurst had been linked under the ownership of Gayhurst Manor since 1265 when Isabel de Goldington married William de Nowers

This formal connection was ended by the Great Sale held by Walter Carlile in 1912, but the villages have remained very close to this day. 

The archives reflect this with a large amount of material covering both Parishes, as well as nearby villages – Ravenstone, Tyringham and Weston Underwood
