Road Alterations In 1853, Lord of the Manor, the Honorable Richard Cavendish took over the ownership and maintenance of the highway from the Buckingham/Stony Stratford turnpike to Thornton in order to take the road further away from the house and to make it more servicable. The River Ouse often flooded and the old road was low in the fields and passed over a ford. Cavendish improved the road by making an embankment and building three bridges, one adjacent to the old canal bridge of 1801/2.
