Mrs Rogers, the first Post Mistress

This photograph of three ladies includes, on the far right, Mrs Jane Rogers who was not only the first Post Mistress in the village but reputedly the first in the whole country. Jessie (far left) took over the running of the Post Office from Jane and became Mrs Cattel on her marriage. The family tradition of Post Mistresses was continued when Isabel Clarke (nee Rogers) took over from Jessie.

According to the 1881 census Jane (34) was the wife of John (36) a Master Bootmaker who employed 1 man and 1 boy. John and Jane had seven children (5 boys and 2 girls) aged between 1-15 and four of whom attended the village school.
