The Great War

The Great War

The names of those who died serving their King and Country inscribed on the War Memorial located in the graveyard of Holy Trinity Church and on the embroidered plaque in the Memorial Hall Community Centre were the only records referencing The Great War in Deanshanger. The 2014 Great War centenary commemorations focussed our attention on this period and the lack of information in the archive. The Society wanted to redress this and became a partner in the Arts and Heritage Alliance-MK Great War MK project supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. DVHS’s project researched the history of the village from 1913-1919 and used the material to create a series of events and activities that engaged the local community. Importantly the Society worked with the Deanshanger Primary School and Yvonne Bell a professional artist who lives in the village.

Some records and events are included here but the Society has more. Research is on-going and if you have information, documents or photographs that you would be willing to share please contact us. Remember your history travels with you wherever you go and we have, as part of our project, gathered a lot of information about families who have moved into the area - this helps to build the bigger picture of the far-reaching effect of the Great War.
