BOCLAND MANOR – HURST END FARM

By the early Tudor period Bocland Manor House at Hurst End had become a farmhouse.

A William Johnson who died in 1593 was said to own a messuage & 20 acres called “Fynalls Land”, Maria Fynall was the owner in 1522.

At the turn of the century William’s grandson Thomas Johnson sold it to William Foskett whose son another William Foskett by his Will of 1658 stated that he was to be buried at Fynalls near adjoining to my house.

Unusually the arable land of this one lay exclusively in the open fields with only a small acreage of pasture.

105 acres of arable land

6 acres Finalls

4 acres Knights Close

2 acres Long Close

    5 acres Small Mead

The grandson William Foskett who owned it in 1772 was one and only bitter opponent of the petition to enclose forwarded to landowners in 1772.

William was awarded just 60 acres of land in Tindery Field and 23 acres in Mathews Field adjacent to his farmhouse.
