The Manor of Great Crawley heretofore Broughtons Court Roll 29th October 1765

This is a view of Frankpledge of our Sovereign Lord the King with Court Baron of William Lowndes Stone Esq., Lord of the said Manor held at North Crawley, in and for the said Manor on Tuesday the twenty ninth day of October in the sixth year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord George the third by the Grace of God of Great Britain, France and Ireland King Defender of the Faith and so forth and in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and sixty five before John Hurst Gentleman Steward there.

RICHARD LOWNDES ESQ.,

At this court it is presented by the Jury and homage aforesaid upon their Oaths that Richard Lowndes Esq., holds to him and his heirs freely of the Lord of this Manor by fealty Suit of Court and the several yearly rents following (that is to say):

One Messuage formerly Franklins with a close thereunto adjoining and certain acres of land thereunto belonging by the yearly rent of two shillings and two pence one pound of pepper and ten ounces of pepper and one pair of gloves AND also one close of pasture lying in Church End called Rolls and thirteen acres of arable land by the yearly rent of ten pence halfpenny AND also certain parcels of land with their Appurtenances formerly ROWS by the yearly rent of three pence halfpenny AND also a parcel of land in the fields called Chicheley Field and Little Crawley Field heretofore Pestills by the yearly rent of three pence and also three acres of land with the Appurtenances by fealty and Suit of Court only AND also certain Lands and Meadows lying in Little Crawley aforesaid and a parcel of land heretofore Perkins’s by the yearly rent of one halfpenny AND also a parcel of land heretofore Styles and formerly Worrals purchased of Richard Page by the yearly rent of three pence halfpenny ALL the Lands and Tenements of William Lowndes Esq., his grandfather deceased and formerly of Nicholls Hackett Esq., deceased which said Richard Lowndes by William Kightley paid here in Court all Arrears of rent for the said premises But his fealty is respited Because etc..

 

CHARLES CHESTER

Also it is presented by the Jury and Homage aforesaid that Charles Chester Esq., holds of the Lord of this Manor by fealty, Suit of Court and the yearly rent of one penny One acre of land in a field called Dean Field in Chicheley aforesaid heretofore the Land of Nicholls Hackett deceased which said Charles Chester not being present here in Court to pay arrears of rent and do his fealty therefore the Bailiff is commanded etc.

 

 

RICHARD SMITH

Also it is presented by the Jury and Homage aforesaid that Richard Smith of Wilden in the County of Bedford Yeoman who held of the Lord of this Manor one messuage with the Appurto in Little Crawley devised to him by John Brittain formerly Nicholls Hackett Esq., by fealty Suit of Court and the yearly rent of three halfpence Aliened the same to William Lowndes Esq,. whereby there happened to the Lord an alienation fine three halfpence which William Lowndes hath since aliened the same to the Lord of this Manor whereby the said rent of three halfpence is merged.

THOMAS HARTWELL from the death of SARAH HARTWELL widow his mother

Also it is presented by the Jury and Homage aforesaid that Sarah Hartwell widow who held of the Lord of this Manor by fealty Suit of Court and the yearly rent of three halfpence One Croft with the Appurto in Little Crawley aforesaid upon which an House was lately built purchased of John Vaux’s of Cranfield and descended to him from John Vaux late of Holcutt deceased since the last Court died thereof seized and that the same descended and came to Thomas Hartwell her son whereby there happened to the Lord of this Manor a relief of three halfpence which said Thomas Hartwell being present here in Court paid the said relief and all arears of rent for the said premises But his fealty is respited Because etc..

MARY NICHOLS from the Death of THOMAS NICHOLS her Husband

Also it is presented by the Jury and Homage aforesaid that Mary Nichols widow holds for the life of Alice Turpin of the Lord of this Manor by fealty Suit of Court and the yearly rent of one halfpenny One Cottage and part of a Croft in Hurst End called White Bread and Milk late Thomas Turpin’s since the said Alice Turpin’s heretofore purchased of John Taylor which said Mary Nichols present here in Court paid all arrears of rent for the said premises but her fealty is respited Because etc..

SAMUEL WRIGHT from the Death of Dennis Wright his Father

 

Also it is presented by Jury and Homage aforesaid that Samuel Wright holds of the Lord of this Manor by fealty Suit of Court and the yearly rent of three halfpence three acres of land purchased of the Trustees of the Lady Carew heretofore fareys and the late Dennis Wright his fathers which said Samuel Wright by James Horn paid here in Court all arrears of rent for the same premises But his fealty is respited Because etc..

 

SARAH WRIGHT from the Death of DENNIS WRIGHT her Husband

 

Also it is presented by Jury and Homage aforesaid that Sarah Wright widow holds of the Lord of this Manor by fealty Suit of Court and the yearly rent of two pence three farthings One Messuage in Brook End heretofore Thomas Marshalls devised to him by Thomas Marshall his late uncle deceased formerly purchased of Ralph Smith Esq., and late the Dennis Wright’s deceased which said Sarah Wright by the said James Horn paid all arrears of rent for the same premises But her fealty is respited Because etc..

 

JOHN ROBERTS on the Death of THOMASIN OLLIFFE widow

Also it is presented by the Jury and Homage aforesaid that John Roberts holds of the Lord of this Manor by fealty Suit of Court and the yearly rent of one halfpenny One Close called Tapps purchased by one James Brierly formerly the husband of Thomasin Olliffe of Ralph Smith Esq., and late the said Thomasin Olliffe which said John Roberts by Thomas Marshall paid here in Court all arrears of rent for the same premises But his fealty is respited Because etc..

 

 

THOMAS SMITH from the Death of THOMAS SMITH his Uncle

Also it is presented by the Jury and Homage aforesaid that Thomas Smith who held of the Lord of this Manor by fealty Suit of Court and the yearly rent of one shilling and two pence One Close called Bulls End Close purchased of Doiley Marks and Joshua Wheeler and formerly of the Co heirs of Rowland Foster since the last Court died thereof seized and that the same descended and came to Thomas Smith his nephew and heir whereby there happened to the Lord of this Manor a relief of one shilling and two pence which said Thomas Smith by George Burge tenant and occupier of the said premises paid here in Court the said relief and all arrears of rent for the same but his fealty is respited Because etc..

TRUSTEES of the Late LORD TREVOR

Also is presented by the Jury and Homage aforesaid that the Trustees of Thomas late Lord Trevor deceased  hold of the Lord of this Manor by fealty Suit of Court and the yearly rent of two shillings and four pence halfpenny One Close called Dryleys purchased of John Thurloe Brace Esq., who purchased the same of William Aspin Esq., deceased which said Trustees by George Bettle the tenant and occupier of the said premises paid all arrears of rent for the same But their fealty is respited Because etc..

ARCHIBALD BUCHANAN ESQ., from the Death of SAMUEL CRICHTON

Also it is presented by the Jury and Homage aforesaid that Samuel Crichton an infant who held of the Lord of this Manor by fealty Suit of Court and the yearly rent of ten shillings One Close called Brittains heretofore Mary Coney’s Widow formerly purchased of John Tinsley and Ann his wife daughter and heir of Richard Smith deceased since of Silvanus Perrott and late of James Buchanan since the last Court died thereof seized and that the same descended and came to Archibald Buchanan of the City of London Esq., whereby a relief of ten shillings happened to the Lord of this Manor which said Archibald Buchanan by William Summerline the tenant paid here in Court the said relief and all arrears of rent for the same premises But his fealty is respited Because etc..

 

DAVID MORTIER from the Death of ESTHER MORTIER his Mother

Also it is presented by the Jury and Homage aforesaid that David Mortier holds of the Lord of this Manor by fealty Suit of Court and the yearly rent of two shillings and ten pence One Messuage in Hurst End with a Close and Barn and diverse parcels of land to the said messuage belonging purchased of Henry Sibthorpe late of his mother Esther Mortier which said David Mortier by William Barratt one of this Homage paid here in Court all arrears of rent for the said premises But his fealty is respited Because etc..

Also it is presented by the Jury and Homage aforesaid that the said David Mortier holds of the Lord of this Manor by fealty Suit of Court and the yearly rent of three halfpence One Cottage with the Appurto in Hurst End formerly Thomas Church’s deceased heretofore William Church’s died and late Thomas Church’s which said David Mortier by the said William Barratt paid here in Court all arrears of rent for the said premises But his fealty is respited Because etc..

Also it is presented by the Jury and Homage aforesaid that the said David Mortier holds of the Lord of this Manor by fealty and Suit of Court and the yearly rent of two pence One Messuage or Tenement at Hurst End heretofore John Halls and late Thomas Church’s which said David Mortier by the said William Barratt paid here in Court all arrears of rent for the said premises But his fealty is respited Because etc..

 

 

 

ANN COOK Widow and THOMAS COOK from the Deaths of JANE wife of CHARLES BARNES of THOMAS COOK ELIZABETH COOK widow

Also it is presented by the Jury and Homage that Ann Cook Widow and Thomas Cook hold severally of the Lord of this Manor by fealty Suit of Court and the yearly rent of two shillings and five pence One Messuage with the Appurtenances in Brook End with one Yard land thereunto belonging late William Cook’s and heretofore of Charles Coleman’s which said Ann Cook and Thomas Cook by William Harrison tenant and occupier of said premises paid all arrears of rent for the same But their fealty is respited Because etc..

JOHN CARTER

Also it is presented by the Jury and Homage aforesaid that John Carter holds of the Lord of this Manor by fealty Suit of Court and the yearly rent of three halfpence half an acre of land upon Berrystead purchased of Thomas Kellows who purchased the same of Robert Nash who purchased the same of Ann relief of Thomas Dudley deceased which said John Carter present here in Court paid all arrears of rent for the said premises But his fealty is respited Because etc..

RICHARD MARKES

Also it is presented by the Jury and Homage aforesaid that Richard Markes holds of the Lord of this Manor by fealty Suit of Court and the yearly rent of one shilling and sixpence One Pightle of Pasture called Ringtail Yard with an house thereupon built and another Pightle called Kings Pightle heretofore ROWTONS late the land of Edward Burge which said Richard Markes by the said Thomas Marshall paid here in Court all arrears of rent for the said premises But his fealty is respited Because etc..

 

THOMAS BASS

 

Also it is presented by the Jury and Homage aforesaid that Thomas Bass holds of the Lord of this Manor by fealty Suit of Court and the yearly rent of two pence One Close of Pasture called Palmers Croft late Alice’s the wife of John Garrett formerly of Thomas Edwards Gentleman who purchased the same of Thomas Baker Gentleman which said Thomas Bass by Ambrose Reddall the tenant and occupier of the said premises paid here in Court all arrears of rent for the same But his fealty is respited Because etc..

 

WILLIAM COOK from the Alienation of GEORGE THOMPSON

 

Also it is presented by the Jury and Homage aforesaid that William Cook holds of the Lord of this Manor by fealty Suit of Court and the yearly rent of three pence halfpenny certain lands heretofore Joseph Woolstones formerly purchased of John Foster Gentleman and before Rowland Foster’s his father who purchased the same of John Foskett and late George Thompson’s which said William Cook by Benjamin Keeble tenant and occupier of the said premises paid here in Court all arrears of rent for the same But his fealty is respited Because etc..

 

WILLIAM FOSKETT

 

Also it is presented by the Jury and Homage aforesaid that William Foskett holds of the Lord of this Manor by fealty Suit of Court and the yearly rent of one shilling and eleven pence One Messuage and diverse parcels of land to the same belonging lying in Hurst End and one Barn called Turnalls and one Pightle called White Bread and Milk late his uncle William Foskett’s deceased and heretofore his grandfather William Foskett’s which lately descended to him from his father John Foskett Gentleman deceased which said William Foskett the grandson present here in Court paid all arrears of rent for said premises But his fealty is respited Because etc..

Also it is presented by the Jury and Homage aforesaid that the said William Foskett holds of the Lord of the said Manor by fealty Suit of Court and the yearly rent of four pence Two roods of land abutting upon Hollows late also his said Uncle William Foskett deceased and heretofore his said late grandfather William Foskett’s which descended to him from his said father John Foskett Gentleman deceased which said William Foskett present here in Court paid all arrears of rent for the same premises But his fealty is respited Because etc..

Also it is presented by the Jury and Homage aforesaid that George Burge holds of the Lord of this Manor by fealty Suit of Court and the yearly rent of four shillings and seven pence farthing One Messuage and Croft adjoining in Broad Mead End late his father George Burge’s deceased who purchased the same of Nicholls Hackett Esq., deceased which said George Burge the son present here in Court paid all arrears of rent for the said premises But his fealty is respited Because etc..

 

DIXEY GREGORY

 

Also it is presented by the Jury and Homage aforesaid that Dixey Gregory holds of the Lord of this Manor by fealty Suit of Court and the yearly rent of four shillings One Close of Land called Unigineers Croft now Wheelers and also one Close called Louis otherwise Arders Croft by fealty and Suit of Court only late his father Dixey Gregory’s and before his Grandfather Thomas Gregory’s which said Dixey Gregory by James Goodman tenant and occupier of the same premises paid here in Court all arrears of rent for the same premises But his fealty is respited Because etc..

 

WILLIAM PLOWMAN from the Alienation of WILLIAM CHIBNALL

 

Also it is presented by Jury and Homage aforesaid that William Plowman holds of the Lord of this Manor One Close called Cloverbed by fealty Suit of Court and the yearly rent of twelve pence and one other Close called Longlands with a wood formerly adjoining by fealty Suit of Court and the yearly rent of ten pence halfpenny late William Chibnalls heretofore purchased of John Sheppard before the land of Thomas Gregory which said William Plowman  by the said James Goodman paid here in Court all arrears of rent for the said premises But his fealty is respited Because etc..

 

FRANCIS ATTERBURY from the Death of OSBORNE ATTERBURY Clerk his Father

 

Also it is presented by the Jury and Homage aforesaid that Francis Atterbury holds of the Lord of this Manor by fealty Suit of Court and the yearly rent of two pence halfpenny One Close  which descended to him on the death of Osborne Atterbury Clerk his late father deceased heretofore Francis late Lord Bishop of Rochester his late Grandfather deceased which said Francis Atterbury by William Taylor tenant and occupier of the said premises paid herein Court all arrears of rent for the same But his fealty is respited Because etc..

 

ROBERT COWLEY

 

Also it is presented by Jury and Homage aforesaid that Robert Cowley holds of the Lord of this Manor One Close called Norfolks by  fealty Suit of Court and the yearly rent of one shilling and six pence halfpenny late his father Robert Cowley’s and before Robert Cowley’s his Grandfather and also one Pightle called Birdshine late Robert Cowley’s his father heretofore ORMANDS by fealty Suit of Court and the yearly rent of five pence in all one shilling and eleven pence halfpenny which said Robert Cowley the Grandson by Robert Cowley the younger his son paid here in Court all arrears of rent for the same premises But his fealty is respited Because etc..

 

 

 

WILLIAM LOWNDES

 

Also it is presented by the Jury and Homage aforesaid that William Lowndes Esq., formerly Lord of this Manor who held of the Lord of this Manor One rood of land at Ditchley Yard Corner by fealty Suit of Court and the yearly rent of two pence and also one acre of land in Ley Field by fealty Suit of Court and the yearly rent of one halfpenny (in all two pence halfpenny) late Anthony Chapmans Gentleman and before Roger Chapmans father of the said Anthony Chapman hath alienated the said premises to the Lord of this Manor whereby the said rent is merged.

 

TRUSTEES of THOMAS late LORD TREVOR deceased

 

Also it is presented by the Jury and Homage aforesaid that the Trustees of Thomas late Lord Trevor hold of the Lord of this Manor by fealty Suit of Court and the yearly rent of two shillings and five pence halfpenny One Messuage and diverse Crofts and one Close in Broad Mead End and one acre of Meadow in Lake Meadow one acre of land in Berrystead and four acres of land at Beggars Bush and a certain Grove called Millers Grove which they purchased of the said William Lowndes late Lord of this Manor and before Estate of John Price Gentleman which said Trustees not being present here in Court to pay the arrears of rent and do their fealty Thereof the Bailiff is commanded etc..

 

RICHARD MARKES from the Death of DOILEY MARKES

 

Also it is presented by the Jury and Homage aforesaid that Richard Markes holds of the Lord of this Manor

One Messuage in East End by fealty Suit of Court and the yearly rent of two pence halfpenny Three Closes called Leonard Croft, Bray Croft & Hay Croft in East End aforesaid at the yearly rent of five shillings and five pence and One Close called Edwins heretofore Harrisons at the yearly rent of one shilling and five pence late his father William Markes deceased and since his brother Doiley Markes deceased which said Richard Markes by the said Thomas Marshall paid here in Court all arrears of  rent for the said premises But their fealty is respited Because etc..

 

FRANCES RIGG from the Death of ROGER HANDASYD ESQ.,

 

Also it is presented by the Jury and Homage aforesaid that Roger Handasyd Esq., who held of the Lord of this Manor by fealty Suit of Court and the yearly rent of three shillings and sixpence One Messuage with a close adjoining in Hurst End late belonging to the Heirs of George Tight and since the last Court died thereof seized and that the same was in and by the last Will and Testament of the said Rogers Handasyd given and devised to Frances Rigg of Mortimer Street near Cavendish Square in the County of Middlesex spinster whereby relief of three shillings and six pence happened to the Lord of the said Manor which said Frances Rigg by William Foskett the tenant and occupier of the same premises paid here in Court the said relief and all arrears of rent for the same But her fealty is respited Because etc..

 

ANN RICHARDS late ANN NEALE Widow

 

Also it is presented by the Jury and Homage aforesaid that Ann the wife of Thomas Richards late Ann Neale Widow holds of the Lord of this Manor by fealty Suit of Court and the yearly rent of five pence farthing Six acres of land purchased of Goddard Urlin Gentleman which were devised to her by the last Will of her late Husband Benjamin Neale deceased which said Ann the wife of the said Thomas Richards by John Neale paid here in Court all arrears of rent for the said premises But her fealty is respited Because etc..

Also it is presented by the Jury and Homage aforesaid that Richard Smith of Wooburne in the County of Bedford Draper holds of the Lord of this Manor One Close in East End called Pells otherwise Erwins by fealty Suit of Court and the yearly rent of one shilling and three pence And also One acre of land in Bulls End by fealty Suit of Court and the yearly rent of three pence And also One acre at Butt End by fealty Suit of Court and the yearly rent of two pence late his mother Ann Smith’s and before Richard Smith’s his father and before that Michael Kilpins which said Richard Smith by John Taylor the tenant and occupier of the said premises   paid here in Court all arrears of rent for the same But his fealty is respited Because etc..

 

SAMUEL WRIGHT from the Death of Dennis Wright his Father

 

Also it is presented by the Jury and Homage aforesaid that Samuel Wright holds of the Lord of this Manor by fealty Suit of Court and the yearly rent of six pence One Pightle late two Pightles in Church End heretofore purchased of the Trustees of the Lady Carew and formerly lands of Edward Ditem late Dennis Wright his father which said Samuel Wright by the said James Horn paid here in Court all arrears of rent for the same premises But his fealty is respited Because etc..

Also it is presented by the Jury and Homage aforesaid that Joseph Page holds of the Lord of this Manor by fealty Suit of Court and the yearly rent of two pence One acre of land lying on Cherry Tree Furlong late Joseph Greenwoods and formerly John Greenwoods which said Joseph Page by Richard Ellis tenant and occupier of the same premises paid here in Court all arrears of rent for the same But his fealty is respited Because etc..

Also it is presented by the Jury and Homage aforesaid that the said Joseph Page holds of the Lord of this Manor by fealty Suit of Court and the yearly rent of two pence One Pightle called Over End Pightle heretofore the land of the said Joseph Greenwood and lately of Mary the Wife of Robert Church and formerly the Wife of the said John Greenwood which said Joseph Page by said Richard Ellis paid here in Court all arrears of rent for the same premises But his fealty if respited Because etc..

Also it is presented by the Jury and Homage aforesaid that Ann Leverett Widow holds of the Lord of this Manor for Life with the reversion to Robert Nash of Harrones Wheelwright and his heirs by fealty Suit of Court and the yearly rent of one penny One acre of land in Dean Field in Little Crawley late Thomas Nashes heretofore purchased of William Valentine and Mary his wife late Wife of Robert Odell which said Ann Leverett by the said Robert Cowley the younger paid here in Court all arrears of rent for the said premises But her fealty is respited Because etc..

 

THOMAS GRIGGS from the Death of JOHN RICHARDS

 

Also it is presented by the Jury and Homage aforesaid that Thomas Griggs holds of the Lord of this Manor by fealty Suit of Court and the yearly rent of three pence One acre of land in Bulls End purchased by Benjamin Leverett of Elizabeth Goodman heretofore Sarah Naples and before Thomas Naples and late John Richards which said Thomas Griggs by the said William Taylor paid here in Court all arrears of rent for the same premises But his fealty is respited Because etc..
