John Garbrand or Garbrande 1590
In the name of god the Father the sonne and the holy ghoste I John Garbrand of North Crawley in the countie of Buckingham Clerke weighing the uncertentie of our mortall life Do dispose of my goodes and chattells by this my last will and testament made xth of December Anno Domini a thousand Fyve hundred Eightie Seaven as Followethe Where as Mr John Bolderne late vicar of Steple Barton in the countie of Oxford gave Sixe pounde thirteene shillinges Fower pence to be employed to the use of the poore people of North Crawleyand Requested an order to be taken for preservacon thereof in suche use for ever which somme of money or stocke ys sure encreased my Desire is that the same may be so employed and some good may be established by the discreteste and hableste of that sayd parishe And that that one Bill of Debts which standethe good againste me and myne Executors etc. for the same and was vd to Thomas Garrarde of Newport Paignell be rensked and cancelled I give and bequesth to the poore people of the sayed parishe which ar and shalbe in contyneuance of tyme a Somme of tenne poundes to be used forin this manner viz: That the Parson for the tyme beinge or his principall term to his absence have the same in his kepinge and Leave yt agayne to the charges of his Successor that shalbe And that thereof any poore Cottage who hath not above three Acres of Lande thein every Feilde shall and may borowe thereof to his Releiffe and surrowe a somme of Twentie shillinges or under so farr as it will reache for one whole yere and no longer Provided that no suche somme be Lents but so that Sewertie be taken of some free holder or other sufficient able man for ye Due restoring thereof agayne And after a one yere yt shalbe Lawfull for the same poore man or any other borowe agayne the sayed or like sommes with like condition yf it shall happen that either the person or tenante shall refuse the paynes (which I truste they will not ) but rather charitablye supplye with theire further Inde.onre Then I willy yerely one or two be appoynted by Fower or sixe of the beste Freeholders of the parishe and that they shall take and use the sayed Stoke as is before specifyed And at every yeres ende or once in the yere to Deliver the same whole and entire over in to the handes of other unlesse it shalbe thoughte good to chose hym or them agayne. Item I give to the poore people of Fardingstone other Fyve pounde to be used and Disposed from tyme to tyme in like order as I have sayd foe Crowlye Item I give to be placed in the Librarye in Newe colledge at Oxforde Epplinius in Exangelia Milleloguium Augustim Opera Ring Locos communes Andra Musereti Opera Brentij in 6 tonis Loco communes Vrsing cum Miscellancis Zanchij Theatrum orbis per Ortelium Item all suche books and papers as were given me by the late Reverend Bishoppe of Salsburye as allso such loose sheetes as I have Drawne for common places gathered out of his bookes I bequeathe to Robert Challoner and John Hartes to give fourth thereof to the benefit of the church Other speciall Remembrances to sundry my good Freindes I commytt to the truste of myne Executors namely my Wife Elizabeth Garbrand and Richard Garbrande my Brother to whome I give all my goodes and Chattells and Lande to be used betwene them ioyntly [jointly] solonge as my wife Lyveth and after her Deceasse to remayne wholly to my Brother Richard. Provided that the bestowe by her laste will or otherwise by deed of gifte where and uppon whome she will (yf she have Desire so to suche legacy and Free giftes as may all amounte to Fortie poundes and not above Item I Bequeathr my Father my brother Chippingdall and my brother Hollwaye to be Overseers and will that every of them have some Rynge made and given yt to the value of iijli vis viijd the pence [£3 6s 8d] Lastly I thanke and prayse god for his manifolde and greate mercyes ever bestowed uppon me and beseche hym for his sonnes sake to keepe my wayses upprighte to Pardon my offenses and so to assiste me with his grace that in my life I may Love hym and at the hower of my Deathe I may not Feare but reioyce to Departe and
