Sir Cuthbert Hacket

Cuthbert Hacket was a City of London merchant and a member of the Worshipful Company of Dyers. Operating from the Guildhall in the City of London Guild members were very powerful and rich individuals following in the footsteps of individuals such as Geoffrey Chaucer and Richard Whittington and had very illustrious careers.

On 26th September 1616 he was elected as an alderman of the City of London for Portsoken ward. He became Sheriff of London for the year 1616 to 1617.

On the 24th January 1623 he joined the Worshipful Company of Dyers and he became an alderman for the Bridge Ward in 1624. Over the years Mayors of London had built up substantial Charitable funds and even to this day all London Bridges maintenance is met by the City of London and not by the government or other local authorities.

In 1626 he was elected Lord Mayor of London and was also Master of the Drapers Company. The Lord Mayor hosts members of Government to this day and was extremely well connected and in 1627 he was knighted for his services.

Cuthbert married Judeth Woar, daughter of Richard Woar a dyer from London and they had a son Roger Hacket ,who became a Doctor of Divinity and Rector of North Crawley, and a daughter Judith.
