The Lowndes Family spread through Buckinghamshire thanks to William Lowndes, Secretary to the Treasury, the son of a Yeoman Farmer from Winslow. He came to North Crawley area via the purchase of Astwoodbury an Estate North of Astwood village for his second son we refer to as William Lowndes of Astwoodbury. He in turn had two sons another William who changed his name to Lowndes Stone in order for his wife Catherine to inherit an Estate in Oxfordshire. His second son Thomas became Vicar of Astwood and later Rector of North Crawley in 1771 who benefited enormously from the enclosure of North Crawley in 1773. As Rector he ended up with one of the richest livings in Bucks but alas he remained unmarried and the inheritance went to other members of the family. Following his death in 1797 the Rectorship of North Crawley went to the Winslow line of Lowndes, the last leaving North Crawley in 1899.
