From 1800 Malta had been governed by the British, with a large military and naval presence, including hospitals. As in the Crimean War, during the First World War Malta again turned into a vast hospital, hence its nickname The Nurse of the Mediterranean.
Dr Eric Webb will demonstrate how the flood of casualties from the Gallipoli Landings were accommodated, the often-ingenious ways that the hospitals were enlarged and equipped, how extra staff were found and the vast supply problems overcome to eventually supply 26,000 beds in 28 hospitals across the island. Hospital ships, and the stories of a few of the 2,000 who remain in Malta in Commonwealth War Graves may also be told. Don’t miss this fascinating and mainly untold story.
