Michael Bevington examines Sir John Vanbrugh’s work at Stowe and the landscape vision he helped to create.
Vanbrugh’s work, from about 1717 to 1724, illustrates his intuitive but hasty genius and his innovative reconstructions. Together with his patron and friend, Viscount Cobham, he introduced archaeological accuracy into architectural reproduction.
