Yardley Gobion History Group
In the mid 1950s the local area had its very own rock‘n’roll group called ‘The Rockets. The line up comprised five members and they were Roy Church on guitar and vocals; Terry Carroll on piano; Les Pittam on trumpet; David “Danny” Williams on drums and Nick Dytham on double bass.
All the other bands in the area were playing big band and dance music; The Rockets were the only ones playing what was in the hit parade such as Lonnie Donnegan’s skiffle, Bill Haley and Elvis Presley.
Even after the era of the teddy boy had faded away The Rockets continued to play locally and their reputation was such that a musical was produced by the Living Archive and performed at the Madcap Theatre in 1994 telling their story.
