Steve Parkin reports on two contrasting pioneering flights through our district – a 1910 a sponsored air race and a 1913 a military deployment. Both contained hair-raising exploits, required pilots with courage and resourceful ground crews.
Steve will show how flying very quickly evolved from a daredevil sport and public amusement into an important extension of military power with commercial opportunities. Military involvement quickly exposed the frailties of aviation and navigation and it set new technical problems to solve. The exploits of the pilots involved are just like those in the 1965 film The Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines.
