Speaker: Andy Stuart. Andy’s talk covers his ancestor’s experience during the Great War and after 1918.
The story starts in Lithuania in 1871 where a family flees a pogrom with a precious trinket. On the 3rd August 1914 Arthur Walton sees this peculiar item the day before he enlists.
Despite the armistice, in 1919 Britain still has men fighting in North Russia. For these men, the war is not over. Sent by Churchill to protect supplies, and in danger of being captured by the Bolsheviks, a relief force is needed, the North Russia Relief Force.
Arthur and two friends respond to Churchill’s call and are sent to Archangel. Mission creep, a mutiny and Bolshevik captors takes them deeper into Russia. The Trans-Siberian Railway controlled by the Czech Legion is the only route out, an English governess the key to success. After months presumed dead, they arrive back in Britain only to be gaoled as revolutionaries.
