Through war, natural disaster, religious turmoil and even the process of repair and updating, many important objects of art and culture became displaced. Over time, such fragments have filled museums and collections.

But how do we recognise important objects when we see them? What has science revealed about the fragmented history of familiar cultural objects? And how can we tell when an attribution is wrong and a claim is mistaken?
