Historic Towcester Survey

With the benefit of a grant from Historic England, a group called the Historic Towcester
Survey was formed in 2018 to record and research the pre-1750 buildings of the town. This research forms part of Historic England’s “Early Urban Buildings” Project. The group has now undertaken an
external survey of the town’s buildings to identify those with potential early material,

Although recording and dating buildings is one of the main objectives of the group it is equally
important to discover what buildings were used for. Using maps, old deeds, rentals, historic newspapers and other documents the group is discovering  how the use of buildings changed and what evidence for this might be preserved in the fabric of the buildings.
