Bakehouses
The 1881 Census lists four bake houses operating in Deanshanger:
• Baker and Grocer, Richard Patrick, aged 35, at The Green. Richard Patrick was born in Corby, Northants. Patrick's Lane was named after him as he built the cottages at the bottom end.
• Baker and Grocer, George Haseldine, aged 44, at High Street who was born in Bedfordshire. He was assisted by his son William, living at the same address and listed as a baker in the records, aged 18. This bake house was later owned by the Masters.
• Journeyman Baker, William Tombs, aged 34, at High Street was born in Wolverton
• Master Baker employing 1 man, Thomas Hyde, aged 43, at High Street was born in Clophill, Beds
These four, family run, bake houses were known to have operated over several generations and are still talked of in the collected memories of villagers. Many recall having their Sunday roasts cooked in the bake house ovens and collected on the way home from church.
