Union Baptist Chapel, High Street
“It is contemplated to erect a new Union Church at Deanshanger. The effort has already gained considerable ground, and handsome subscriptions have been received. Mr. E. Roberts contributed £100 and the site, and Mr. H. Roberts £100. No doubt the effort is highly appreciated by the inhabitants of the constantly increasing village of Deanshanger”
extract from the Northampton Mercury published Friday 6th November 1891.
The Roberts family were an influential force in the village and promoted the non-conformist cause. The Union Baptist Chapel was opened in 1898 taking over from the original non-conformist chapel on Willow Green and closed as a centre of religious worship in 1973. The building was then used for a variety of commercial premises, including Telegraph Books depository. It stood empty for several years before becoming a private residence in the early 2000s.
