The Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry took part in the first day of the Battle of the Somme on 1 July 1916, in which the British Army suffered over 60,000 casualties – the largest number sustained in a day by the British Army.
Pte Edward Whitlock from Banbury had been the first British soldier to die on the Somme front, when killed in early morning shelling in July 1915. Some 2,000 from the regiment fell on the Somme over the next 17 months.
