Number stations are shortwave transmissions from foreign intelligence agencies to spies in the field , which carry encrypted messages in form of groups of numbers or letters. While the encryption methods used by most number stations are unknown, some have used a one-time pad.
Number stations offer a powerful advantage: practically complete anonymity. The recipient of the message can receive instructions without fear of being traced. All the recipient needs is a shortwave radio and to be in the right place at the right time.
This talk by Paul Beaumont will examine the modes used, the different styles of sending and will explain a number of actual cases where Number Stations were used and stated in the prosecution of the recipients.
