The Posse Comitatus was a list of men between the ages of 16 and 60, who were not already in the army, but who could be conscripted to serve. It includes a list of those with horses and carts. The list was compiled because there was a belief that the French might attempt to invade England.
Militia: Ballot 1831 and Royal Bucks 1799-1815
In the 1799-1815 Royal Bucks Register Sherington men who are known to have served in the Militia in this period are recorded. Anyone selected for service had the option of nominating a substitute who agreed to serve in their place and Sherington men who are known to have been substituted are also listed.
In 1831, the Parish Constable was required to compile a list of all males between the ages of 18 and 45 who were liable to be called up to serve in the Militia. Each parish had to provide a certain number of men, who were chosen from the list by ballot. Those in certain occupations were exempt. In addition, those with children were only selected if there were too few without children to meet the quota. The list was published prior to the ballot, with a right of appeal.
