There were 134 households with a total population of 447, a decrease of 49 people in the ten years since the previous census in 1911.

The name, address, relationship, status, age, birthplace, occupation and workplace is recorded for each person.

The 1921 Census should have been taken on 24 April, but was delayed by nearly two months in the wake of the Black Friday strike by railwaymen, coal miners and transport workers. This is the one and only time that the census date was changed.

The census was taken on the night of Sunday 19th June 1921.

This was the second census where the head of the household was responsible for completing the census form him/herself.

This was the first Census after WWI – sadly a number of Villagers lost their lives in the conflict. This census was the first to collect data on “orphanhood”.

The transcription includes some information that was crossed out, because in most cases this was additional information that was not officially required, rather than being wrong.

It is recommended that you compare the 1921 census data with that of the 1910 Land Survey, which provides additional information on both owners and occupiers of the property in the village. The 1910 Land Survey also includes detailed maps showing where people actually lived.

Column Headings

The column headings of the 1921 census contain further notes which are listed below.

Name and Surname of every Person

Whether Member of Family, Visitor, Boarder, or Servant, who (1) passed the night of Sunday, 19th June 1921 in this dwelling and was alive at midnight, or (2) arrived in this dwelling on the morning of Monday, June 20th, not having been enumerated elsewhere. No-one else must be included.

Relationship to Head of Household

State whether “Head”, or “Wife”, “Mother”, “Son”, “Daughter”, “Step-son”, or other Relative, “Visitor”, “Boarder”, or “Servant”.

Age

In years and months. For infants under one month write “Under one month”.

Sex

If Male write “M”, if Female write “F”.

Marriage or Orphanhood

For persons aged 15 and over write “Single”, “Married”, “Widowed”, or if marriage dissolved by divorce write “D”.

For children aged under 15 write “Both Alive” if both parents be alive. “Father Dead” if father be dead; “Mother dead” if mother be dead; or “Both Dead” if both parents be dead.

Birthplace and Nationality

(1) if born in the United Kingdom write the name of the County and of the Town or Parish.

(2) if born outside the United Kingdom write the name of the Country, and of the State, Province or District, or

(3) If born at Sea, write “At Sea”.

 

If not born in the United Kingdom state whether Visitor or Resident in this country and  state the nationality if born in a foreign country e.g. “British born”,  “Naturalised British subject”, “French”, “German”, “Russian” etc.

Personal Occupation

If attending a School or any kind of Educational Institution for the purpose of receiving Instruction, write “Whole-time” or “Part-time” as the case may be.

State here the precise branch of Profession, Trade, Manufacture, Service etc.

Where the occupation is connected with Trade or Manufacture, the reply should be sufficient to show the particular kind of Work done, stating where applicable the Material worked in, and the Article made or dealt in, if any.

Employment

(1) If working for an employer state the name and business of present employer (person, firm, company or public body) or, if at present out of work, of last employer , adding “out of work.”

(2) If employing persons for purposes of business write “Employer.”

(3) If working on own account and not employing persons for purposes of business write “Own Account.” (Note – For Domestic Servants and others in private personal service, write “Private.”).

Place of Work

Give the address of each person’s place of work.

For a person with no regular place of work write “No fixed place”.

If the work is carried out mostly at home, write “At home”.

(No entry is required for any person who is retired or out of work).

Information required only in respect of Men, Widowers and Widows

Number and age of all living children and step children under 16 years of age.
