Between 1753 and 1827, a record was kept of the Innkeepers, Alehousekeepers and Victuallers licensed by the Justices of the Peace at Quarter Sessions. The table below summarises the licensees of each of the public houses over this period, the information being taken from the transcription of the Sherington entries.

The spelling of the surnames is very variable, e.g. Slater/Slayter/Slatter/Slatyer/Slather/Slatcher, Stafford/Stratford, Clare/Clear/Clark/Clarke, Cave/Caves, Hine/Hinde, Westly/Westley.

The White Hart continued throughout the full period except for 4 years (1786 and 1790 to 1792) when the licensee Richard Clare is recorded as being at the Catherine Wheel (although in 1790 this is recorded as the Cart Wheel – possibly a misread abbreviation), which had been the name of another public house open from 1753 (or earlier) to 1760. It is not known whether the White Hart was temporarily renamed, or whether Richard Clare temporarily moved to another building, perhaps whilst repairs or renovations were being made to the White Hart, or whether it was just a mistake by the Clerks.

The Swan closed in 1806/7 and did not re-open before at least 1828. The landlady, Elizabeth Slater, at the time of closure moved to the Rose and Crown a year later. The Rose and Crown itself closed in 1817/8.

In 1778, William Durdin opened the New Inn, which traded for three years, but then closed when William King opened the Plough. It is not known if this was simply a change of name or a different building. The Plough itself closed after 2 years and William King moved to the Rose and Crown. The locations of the New Inn, the Plough and the Catherine Wheel are not known.

In some of the earlier years, the sign of the public house was not recorded. However, it is relatively easy to associate the licensee with the sign. In such cases the licensee’s name is shown in brackets. Where the sign of the public house is not exactly as shown in the column heading, the variant is shown in brackets after the licensee’s name.

In 1872, the White Hart and Crown and Castle had been re-joined by the Swan, but the King’s Head had closed.
