11/141 SHERINGTON CHURCH END – Parish Church of St. Laud. (17.11.66)

Parish church. Nave, north aisle and crossing mid C13, south aisle and porch mid C14. Chancel rebuilt, upper part of central tower, clerestory, nave and aisle timber roofs c1475. Limestone rubble and dressings. Lead roofs, but old plain tiles to chancel roof. Plain parapets to nave and aisles, battlemented to tower and west end. The plan consists of a 2 bay chancel with C19 north vestry. Central tower, then 4 bay aisled nave with 2 storey south porch. Perpendicular 3-light chancel windows. Central tower is of three storeys. At east angles are diagonal buttresses and to south west semi-octagonal stair turret. Below belfry stage which has pairs of tall 2-light windows are 3 centred relieving arches. Nave south aisle has 2 south windows of 3-lights with flowing elaborate tracery of c1330.

Then 2 storey porch with diagonal buttresses, a north west stair turret. 2 order outer entrance arch. Inside stone benches along side walls with trefoil leaded tracered blind arcades over To left of porch 3-light geometric decorated window having 3 cusped circles. West elevation has large 5-light window of C15, cinquefoil lights, vertical tracery and 2-centred head. Clerestory has 4 windows of 3 uncusped lights in 4 centred heads. North aisle has on north wall 2, 2-light windows, east one C16, the west c 1340. C14 central doorway. 3-light windows to east wall of aisles. Interior. Central Ntower has east and west arches of 3 chamfered orders to 3 engaged circular shafts. Nave north arcade circular piers with C13 moulded bases and capitals large square plinths. 2 chamfered orders to arches. Apparently rebuilt c1500. South arcade similar but with octagonal piers and C14 moulded bases and capitals. Nave roof, early C16, low pitched with moulded tie-beams, purlins and wall plate, resting on shield corbels. North aisle roof similar but with angel corbels. South aisle roof similar, but without angels. Porch has stone vault with carved boss. Piscine in north aisle, partly obscured by nave north wall, trefoil head, C13, South aisle ogee headed C14 Triple sedilia in chancel, C15 font octagonal with moulded panels having saints under crocketed ogee arches. Stem has tracered panels. C15 1783 brass ‘spider’ candelabrum. Pulpit C18 RCHM 11 259 MON. 1

11/142  SHERINGTON CHURCH ENDLychgate to south-east corner of churchyard of Parish Church of St.Laud.

Covered lychgate. c1890. Timber framed with plastered infill on stone waist high walls. Old tiled roof. In West country cusped bracing style of timber framing, formed in small panels. Cusped braces to ridge. Diagonal cusped braces to side walls . Gates have large diagonal braces and scrolled standards; large braces to each side of passage way. Roof set at right angles to passage.

11/143 SHERINGTON CHURCH END Anonymous tomb to south-west of west corner of nave of Parish Church of St.Laud. [Dr John Cheyne]

Tomb c1850. In red sandstone with limestone inscription slabs. About 8 feet high in two stages rising from plain plinth, upper stage diminished. Sandstone frames to recessed panels. Then covered cornice to top. The tomb is a curiosity in that it is deliberately anonymous, 3 sides having biblical texts, the east inscription starting “READER: The Name, Profession and Age of him whose body lies within are of little importance…” The inscription slabs are on the upper stage.

11/144 SHERINGTON CHURCH END  – Church farmhouse (22.11.80)

Farmhouse. C18 with C19 rear range. Stone rubble. Old tile roof. Victorian ranges in red brick. 2 storeys and attic. 3 bays. South front has central door, 4 panelled, and ogee roofed C19 porch in wrought iron 4 pane sashes with keyblocks over. 3 2-light hipped dormers flanking brick stacks. Victorian ranges have sashes and casements and, to east, 2 storey central bay window.

11/145 SHERINGTON CHURCH ENDNos 1 (May Cottage) and 3

Pair of cottages, C17, no. 1 altered C19.Rubblestone, No, 1 colourwashed. Thatched roof. Each of 2 bays and 2 storeys. No.1 has central door of 2 vertical panels and bracketted hood. 3 pane sash windows with narrow margin glazing. No, 3 central board door, 3-light casements, 2-light to upper floor. Brick chimneys to south and in centre. Coped gable on kneelers to south No. 1 has lean-to rear addition.

11/146  SHERINGTON CHURCH ENDNo 5 (Calgary House)

House. C18, altered C19 Colourwashed rubblestone. Slate roof. 2 bays, 2 storeys, originally 1½ but upper storey raised in brick, also colourwashed. Central door has C19 flathood on brackets. 3 pane sash windows with narrow margin glazing. Coped gables with kneelers, flanking brick stacks. 2 storey rear wing.

11/147 SHERINGTON CHURCH END – Sherington Place (formerly listed as House on the corner of Gun Lane) (17.11.66)

House. C18 Dressed limestone facade, coursed rubble flanks. and rear elevation. 2 storeys plus cellars and attic. Old tile roof, 3 bays. 6 panel central door with lozenge pattern glazing to fanlight over in doorcase of cross-reeded pilasters with capitals and similar brackets supporting cornice hood. Approached by flight of 7 moulded stone steps with C19 cast-iron railing. 4 pane sashes with keystones, 3 pane over door. Keyed heads. Band, course moulded eaves. Brick flanking chimneys. Interior has good C18 staircase.

11/148 SHERINGTON CHURCH ROAD – No. 8 (Arbour House)

House. C18 Coursed rubble. Old tile roof. 2 wide bays, 2 storey plus dormers. South west front has central door flanked by 3-light casements to both floors. 2 2-light roofed dormers. Coped gables flanking brick chimneys.

11/149 SHERINGTON CHURCH ROAD – No. 22(Griggs Farm)

House. C18 Coursed rubblestone. Concrete pantile roof. 2 storeys and 3 bays; to west or right single storey outbuilding. Central door, casement windows, 4-light to left, 3 to right. lst floor has 3-light left casement and 2 2-light ones. Oak lintels. Brick end stacks. Small 2 storey rear extension.

11/150  SHERINGTON CHURCH ROAD – No 24

House. C18. Coursed rubblestone, concrete pantile roof. 2 bays and 2 storeys. Church Road front has left hand casement and door to right. 1st floor 3-light casement to right bay. Gable elevation has 3-light casement and attic window. No 24 has party wall with No 22 (Griggs Farm) and No 2 School Lane (q.v.) and is a corner building.

11/151 SHERINGTON CROFTS ENDNo 1 (Mercers Farmhouse)

House. Dated 1760. Coursed rubblestone. Old tile roof. 3 bays and 2 storey with dormers. South front altered C19 with 4 panel door in right hand bay. Plain wide architraved doorcase with flat hood on brackets. 5 pane sash windows. Datestone between left hand first floor windows. 2 2-light hipped dormers coped gable ends and flanking brick chimney. One storey wing to right, 2 storey rear wing, also rubblestone.

11/152 SHERINGTON CROFT END –  No 23 (The Laurels) (3.3.52)

House. late C16 or early C17 Coursed rubblestone. Old tile roofs. 2 storeys and gabled attics. North and south ranges linked by one bay east and west wings, north range centre bay omitted and thus house forms open courtyard. East front double gabled with central doorway behind C19 gabled porch. 2 storey flat roofed bay windows to outer bays, leaded casements, 2 2-light over door, 3 and 2 light to attics and single light to right gable bay. Bay windows have dentil eaves. South front, facing road has 3 bays of C19 sashes and canted bay window to right hand ground floor bay. West front also has 2 gables. Stone coped gables on kneelers. Chimney stacks between bays, including one on south front with stone base and two diagonal brick shafts. Interior has late C16 or early C17 staircase with flat carved balusters and plain handrail. 11/153    SHERINGTON CROFTS ENDSherington Chapel and attached cottages each side. (17.11.66)

Non conformist chapel, dated 1822. Chequer brick, some stone dressings slate roof. North front of 2 storeys, 3 bays. Arched central 6 panel flush double door, round stone panel over. Outer bays have arched 2-light windows with interlacing leading. Door and windows have stone arches with key blocks. Dentilled pediment with date panel “Sherington Chapel 1822” Main part flanked by lower 2 storey wings with similar brick, hipped slate roofs, each having one bay of similar but smaller leaded and arched windows. Dentilled eaves continue along sides of building.

Cottages. C18 altered. Coursed rubblestone. Slate roofs. Each 2 bays and 2 storeys. Central 4 panelled doors under gabled hoods with cut barge boards. 3-light casements. Party stack are to left gable of No 24. No 24 has one bay, one storey east wing, 3 light casement, slate roof. No. 22 has 2 storey stone range to rear.

11/155 SHERINGTON GUN LANENo 1 (The White Hart Inn) (17.11.66)

C18, altered C19. Colourwashed rendered rubblestone. Old tile roof. Originally 2 storeys but third produced by raising front wall in brick, then rendering over, 3 bays. South front has 6 panelled centre door in doorcase of plain pilasters, frieze and cornice hood. Canted bay windows with 4 pane sashes to outer bays. 5 pane lst floor sashes. String above, formerly eaves line, then 3 flat-roofed dormers with 4 pane sashes. Flanking brick stacks. Rubblestone exposed on rear elevation.

11/156 SHERINGTON HIGH STREET (west side) – No. 1 (The Lodge)

House. Early C19 Coursed rubblestone with slate roof. 3 bays and 2 storeys. Centre 6 panel door in fluted doorcase below cut bracket hood. Modern bay windows either side. 3 first floor sashes, 5 panes wide to outer bays, 4 over door. Bracketed eaves and stone coped gables on kneelers. Parallel rear range in brick, mid C19 hipped roofed north west range.

11/157 SHERINGTON HIGH STREET (west side) – No.43 (The Old Castle)

House. formerly a public house, C18. Colourwashed rubblestone. Old tile roof. 3 bays and 2 storeys plus dormers. Off centre. 6-panel door in architrave surround, frieze and cornice hood. Canted flat-roofed bay windows with sashes to outer bays, 3 pane sashes to lst floor over, not to centre bay. Then 2-light flat-roofed dormers to outer bays. Coped gable ends and flanking stacks.

11/158 SHERINGTON HIGH STREET (west side) – Nos 47 and 49

House. now subdivided. C17, altered C18 and C19. No 47 Part timber framed, remainder coursed rubblestone. Slate roofs. 4 bays  now divided into 2 2-bay houses, 2 storeys. No 49 left hand door under a slated hood, 3 light casement, first floor has 2 2-light casements. One dormer gable elevation to road has right hand door and modern porch 2-light casements and a gable
stack. No 47 has central door behind rustic porch. 3 light casements. East gable and rear is rendered over timber-framing of C17. At junction of Nos 47 and 49 is early C17 brick stack with moulded plinth and plain square flue. Inside No 49 is chamfered fireplace lintel, partly cut, and inside No 47 is chamfered and stopped spine beams and fielded panelled hallway of early C19. This house with its timber framing of 17th century date is a rare survival in this part of Buckinghamshire. RCHM II 261 MON 9

11/159 SHERINGTON HIGH STREET (west side) – No 53 (Home Farmhouse)

House. C17, refronted 1849. Ashlar C19 elevations. coursed rubble others. Old tile roofs. 2 storeys. Letter L-plan; each wing of 2 bays. West and North (or rear) elevations with C18 casements, but main elevations to south and east refaced in 1849. South wing has 6-panel door to right hand bay. 3-light stone mullioned ground floor casements, 2-light to first floor and eaves breaking with stone gables. Lozenge pattern glazing bars. Street gable elevation of north wing has canted stone bay
window to ground floor, cross-casement to first floor and in gable date shield inscribed “A.D.1849′ Coped gables with kneelers. North wing has C17 ashlar stack in centre with moulded base and caps. West and South gables have similar stacks, but rendered. South gable of south wing has 2-light casements, stone plinth and brick gable.

Barn. C18. Rubblestone with quarter-hipped old tile roof. 5 bays with central cart entry opposite low north draught door. Double purlin roof, upper with collar, and raking queen posts to lower purlins.

11/161 SHERINGTON HIGH STREET (west side) – No 59 (Church End Farmhouse)

Farmhouse. C17, altered C18. Colourwashed rubblestone. Modern Pantile roof. 3 bays and 2 storeys. Entry between right hand bays has 5 panelled door under stone hood on stone brackets. Sash windows with oak lintels, 4 pane to left bay, 5 to other two. Stone coped gable end with kneelers to right hand. 2 storey stone rear range.

11/162 SHERINGTON HIGH STREET (east side) – The Manor House

Farmhouse. C18, altered C19. Coursed rubblestone, slate roofs. 3 storeys. 4 bay street front with lower 2 bay west wing and C19 rear block. Right hand c1840 door in rectangular porch with piers, entablature and blocking course. Sash windows. Bay 2 has arched staircase window. Render strips to each end. Centre and flanking stacks. Lower wing has 2 bays of sashes and central door. Rear block has panelled eaves with reeded strip, decoration to the soffits, tripartite and modern sashes. Interior has early C18 oak closed string staircase from first floor up. Ground floor to first floor stair flight has 3 balusters per tread. First floor left hand room has C18 panelling.

11/163 SHERINGTON HIGH STREET (east side) – No 6 (The Small House)

House, dated 1756. Coursed rubblestone, left hand part old clay tiles, remainder thatched. 3 bays and 2 storeys, two right hand bays with eyebrow dormers. Then 4 bay barn adapted to garage and accommodation. Left hand bay has 6-panel door at right with projecting cornice hood. 3 light casements. Next 2 bays have 3 light casements, oak lintels and 2-light dormers with tiled aprons. Datestone between first floor windows ‘W.B.L. 1756’. Then converted barn with stone blocked cart entry. 2 3-light casements to ground floor, right-hand first floor 2-light casement only. Garage doors in gable elevations 2 storey colourwashed and slated rear wing off north end.

11/164 SHERINGTON HIGH STREET (east side) – No 16 (Harriet’s End) (6.4.79)

Cottage. Late C17 with C19 west bay. Coursed rubblestone, left bay brick. Thatch roof, old tile roof to right hand addition. 2 bays with left hand former stable and hayloft addition; 1 bay addition to right. 2 storeys South front has centre door and 2 3-light casements, the upper cutting into the thatch left hand stable windows altered to casements. 4 light to ground floor, 3 to first. Gable elevation has blind window recess to first floor and 4-light ground floor casement and board door. Half-hipped gable. Right addition has 1 small casement. Stacks flank 2 main bays and to east gable. Inside are chamfered and stopped spine beams.

11/165  SHERINGTON THE KNOLLNos 2 and 3

House, now subdivided. C18. Coursed rubblestone, old tile roofs, 2 storeys plus dormers on letter L-plan. No 2 facing south is 2 bays of 3-light casements with central horizontal glazing bar. Two 2-light hipped dormers. Side entry, flanking  stacks. Modern shutters, No 3 is 3 bays, facing east. 3-light central horizontal glazing bar windows to outer bays with 2-light hipped dormers over. Central bay has small modern windows. Circa 1975 flat roofed 2 storey stone addition.

11/166  SHERINGTON THE KNOLLNo 8

Cottage. Early C18. Coursed rubblestone, some brick. Thatched roof. Left hand part 1 bay and 1½ storeys, right part 2 bays, 1 storey with roof raised in brick, painted to represent stone, and provide upper storey. Left hand part: door to right and 3 light casement to left. 2-light dormer above window. Right hand bays have 2 2-light casements, one left hand dormer. Stacks to gables (lowered to ridge at left) and centre.

11/167  SHERINGTON LEY VIEW –  No 1 (formerly known as No 17 High Street)

House. C18. Coursed rubblestone. Old tile roof. 2 bays and 2 storeys. Centre 4-panelled door. 4 pane high paired casements, the door and ground floor windows under a continuous oak lintel. Brick gable stacks. 1 storey addition to left.

11/168 SHERINGTON PARK ROAD – No. 16 (Yew Tree Farmhouse) (3.3.52)

House Dated 1595, altered and extended to south. Coursed rubblestone and old tile roof. 3 bays with centrally located staircase tower at rear. 2 storeys with attic. At rear modern flat roofed 2 storey addition and to south late C17 single storey cottage of 2 bays. West elevation has central entrance with modern open gabled porch on posts. C19 triple casements with single horizontal central glazing bar. Coped gables and end- stacks. Cottage has central door and tile roofed porch, similar windows. At rear staircase tower has timber mullioned 2-light windows to 1st and 2nd floor levels with heavy chamfers, 1595. Also one rear 2-light mullioned window to south 1st floor room, also of 1595. Interior 1595 heavily chamfered door frames into stair tower. 1st floor has cross beams and spine beams with heavy chamfers and moulded stops. It appears that the upper floor was originally open from end to end. On ground floor are similarly stopped and chamfered cross-beams. 1595 roof structure intact. On west front flanking first floor centre window are 2 stone plaques, the left hand one with fleur-de-lys, the right with ‘1595’. [RCHM II 261 MON 3]

11/169 SHERINGTON PARK ROAD No. 18 (Roadside)

House. C18 with C19 east range. Coursed rubblestone, plain clay tile roof. 2 bay, 2 storey C18 block. Gable elevation has 2-light casement and square 2-light flat roofed lst floor oriel off-centre. Coped gable with kneelers. Road front has. 2-light casements to right-hand bay. Garden or south front has 3 pane C19 sash door, 2-light 1st floor casement and stone moulded eaves. C19 lower 2 bay, 2 storey east range has 2-light casements and a slate roof.

11/170 SHERINGTON PARK ROAD – No. 1 (includes former No. 3)

House. formerly subdivided. C17, altered C18 with C19 west block colourwashed rubblestone, C19 block in herringbone-set rubble with brickdressings. Tile roofs. Earlier parts 2 bays. 2 storeys with attic. Sashes to ground floor with door to right part of left bay in modern trellis porch; Blocked door to right. Casements to 1st floor. Centre and left hand sack, Modern one storey rear extension. Inside chamfered and stopped spine beams. Left hand late C19 bay has bay window to left flank. Sash windows.

11/171 SHERINGTON SCHOOL LANE – No 16 (The Old Rectory) (formerly listed as The Rectory)  (3.3.52)

House, formerly the Rectory, Dated 1607. Coursed rubblestone. Old tile roof. 2 storeys and attic, built on an H-plan. South front has 3 window wide centre and projecting gabled wings flanking. Right gable has 2-light stone mullioned casements, all C20 replacements with voussoir heads and keyblocks below drip moulds. Attic window timber casement. Left hand gable has 2-light 1st floor and 4 light ground floor similar stone framed windows. Centre has C17 style colonnade with pierced balustrade to first floor balcony. Centre door flanked by 2-light stone mullioned windows, 3 windows to first floor, moulded and bracketed. Painted cornice and 2-light light dormers flanking gabled belcote in roof. North front also has projecting gabled flanking wings. Centre has 1607 2-light ovolo mullioned leaded 1st floor window, others sashes. 4 pane to ground floor, 5 pane to 1st floor on left hand gabled wing. Coped gables and kneelers throughout. Datestone on south west angle quoin inscribed ‘Tertio Aprilis I.M. 1607’ Interior has some C17 fireplaces with stone jambs and oak lintels. C18 staircase with turned balusters and moulded handrail. Some reused C17 panelling [RCHM II 261MON 5]

11/172  SHERINGTON SCHOOL LANENo 2

House. Dated 1776. Rubblestone with concrete pantile roof. 2 bays and 2 storeys. Centre door. Oak lintels to openings. Right hand bay has 5 pane box sashes, left bay paired casements. One right hand dormer. Datestone between 1st floor windows inscribed ‘T (Thomas)E (Elizabeth)R(Rogers) 1776. Brick stack at right shared with, No 24 Church Road (q.v.)

05/173 SHERINGTON SHERINGTON ROAD Sherington Bridge over River Ouse (17.11.66)      [On National Register – this is shown as Lathbury Parish]

Bridge. C18, repaired and c1972 parapets removed and concrete deck introduced to widen it. Dressed rubblestone. 3 centre arches with keyblocks divided by rusticated pilasters on cut & Vatew supporting string at base of former parapet. Flanked by angular bays on cutwaters and beyond a single brick arch to approach causeways. Concrete
deck and parapets over laid, but do not interfere with main C18 structure, only removing the stone parapets.

11/174 SHERINGTON WATER LANE No 9 (Water Lane Farmhouse)

Farmhouse. Early C18. Coursed rubblestone, old tile roof. 3 bays and 2 storeys with 2 storey wing from central bay of north front and 2 storey range to south west. Water Lane front has 3-light casements to outer bays and doorway in projecting wing with casement over. Blocked doorway to right of projection; Rear elevation has casements and modern porch in south east angle. Central and flanking brick stacks. South west range in stone with brick east elevation, casement windows.

11/175 SHERINGTON WATER LANEBarn to South East of No 9 (Water Lane Farmhouse)

Barn. Dated 1774. Coursed, rubblestone with old tile roof. 4 bays with off-centre entry then 2 further bays, formerly separated into stables and haylofts. Half-hipped gables. In north gable toplight of tracery window (from Parish Church?). 2 date stones on west wall end bays inscribed ‘T(Thomas E (and Elizabeth)R(Rogers)1774’ Double purlin roof with raking queen posts to lower purlin and collar to upper. 2 bay half hipped-roofed wagon shed to north, also with old tile roof.

11/176 SHERINGTON WATER LANE – Nos 16 (Primrose Cottage) and 18

Pair of cottages, originally built as a Friends Meeting House. Early C19. Coursed rubblestone, slated roofs. 2 storeys, each cottage of 1½ bays, the centre half bay being shared by both with 2-light window to 1st floor across party wall. No 18 has part glazed 4 panel door, No 16 board door with arched vision panel. Gothick Y-traceried leaded casements to outer bays and across party wall at mezzanine level to staircase. Flanking stacks and projecting eaves. No 18 has lean to at left, No 16 has lean to and set back 2 storey 1 bay addition with Gothick window to match built c1980

11/177 SHERINGTON THE KNOLL K6 Telephone Kiosk

Telephone kiosk. Type K6. Designed 1935 by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. Made by various contractors. Cast iron. Square kiosk with domed roof. Unperforated crowns to top panels and margin glazing to windows and door.
