Johnson Genealogy

In 1910 there were more people carrying the surnames Johnson and Atkins than any other surname in the village of Yardley Gobion. Julie Brown has spend a great deal of her time tracking down as many descendants of the Yardley Johnsons as she has been able to find. Unfortunately I am unable to produce a family tree as it runs into something llike fifty sheets. I know it’s always easier to see the connections on a tree but I am only going to reproduce here Julie’s descendant chart. Once you start looking at it you will realise the amount of work that went into the collection of the information. If you are related then I am sure Julie would be pleased to hear from you, contact me, Brenda and I will pass on your details. Julie’s great grandmother was Clara Johnson later Atkins.

Below I include a photograph of Julie’s father Reginald Brown with Clara her great grandmother taken some time in the 1930s.

Descendants of Charles Johnson

Author: Julie Isard-Brown

I have been doing research into my family tree for 18 months now, and in that time I have amassed a great deal of information on the Johnson family descendants. I have made contact with many other branches and they have contributed to the data that I now hold.

I attach the pertinent data for my family. There is a lot more, but to show it all would take up a great deal too much. If anybody would like any help with Potterspury research, there is probably a 85% chance that I can help them.

The head of this branch is John Johnson, who married Elizabeth Smith on 16 Nov 1767, in Potterspury. John lived to be an amazing 99 years old, being buried 01 Dec 1837 in Potterspury. Between them they had 10 children, of whom Charles was the youngest, before Elizabeth died, aged 51, being buried on 18 Sep 1796, also in Potterspury. After Elizabeth died John remarried on 26 Aug 1798 to Ann Pendle, also of Yardley Gobion. They had one more child, Joseph, who populated Blisworth with Johnsons. Ann died before John, aged 60, being buried 12 Dec 1821.

Notes for WALTER JAMES ATKINS:

Military Service:

Regiment: Leicestershire Regiment

Battalion: 2nd battalion

Service Number: 449

Rank: Private

Arena of Duty:

3rd Anglo-Burma Campaign – In India from 1883 at Jubbulpore. The 2nd Battalion marched from Jubbulpore on 7th February 1885 and arrived Lucknow 14th March. On 13th November 1888, the 2nd Battalion left Lucknow for Burmah, the headquarters, arriving at Thayetmayo on 3rd December, detaching three companies to Myingyan and one to Salen in Upper Burmah.

In consequence of frequent raids made by rebels and dacoits amongst the Chin tribes, a detachment of 100 men, stationed at Myingyan, proceeded on 28th December to join the Chin Field Force, Southern Division, and was employed in repelling raids, and in punitive expeditions against the Chins, until the following June. Walter was one of those despatched to Myingyan.

On 16th January 1889, a party, whilst exploring a dacoit stronghold in the hills, ame upon a body of about 100 men behind a strong stockade, whom they expelled, killing and wounding several, the firing being kept up at close quarters for about twenty minutes. The Lieutenant in command and the Burman magistrate were both severely wounded, also one private severely, who afterwards died, and one slightly.

The Battalion left Thayetmayo, en route for Aden, on 7th November 1889, where it arrived on the 29th, having suffered a good deal from sickness during its eleven month stay in Burmah.

On 12th November 1890, the 2nd Battalion embarked at Aden for England, arriving at Portsmouth on 30th, and on 2nd December, proceeded to Warley.

More information on this conflict: Poor relations between Burma and Great Britain had their root in the efforts of the despotic and extravagant Burmese King Thebaw to extort money from the British “Bombay and Burma Trading Company” in 1885. Patience exhausted, a British expeditionary force was sent to Burma that year which eventually deposed the King who was removed to a place of security in India. Upper Burma was then annexed to the British Empire on 1st January 1886 and there followed a very unsettled period in which there were many clashes between native insurgents (known as “dacoits”) and resident British troops. This guerrilla warfare increased during the following two years. Finally, at the end of January 1889 a column of troops was dispatched against the Kachyins and Lepu tribes in the north-east of Upper Burma and after several weeks of hard marching and skirmishing, Khama, the principal town of the Lepu tribe, was captured and destroyed. Thjis signaled the end of the deliberate offensive and the British troops returned to their barracks. However, the clashes with dacoits and hill tribes continued.

Medals: Awarded Burma Campaign medal 1887-1889

On wife Clara’s death certificate Walter’s occupation is listed as Belt repairer in Railway Works
