John was the son of Thomas Swain and married Sarah who was the daughter of his uncle Richard. Although born in Yardley Gobion it appears that he was living in the Old Wolverton area at the time the older children started school. In 1900 they moved back into the village, this was about the same time that baby Dorothy arrived. In 1903 they apparently moved away again as all the children left the local school.

Frederick J. Swain was also a son of Thomas Swain, he was unfortunately killed in an accident at work in 1931. He was the Fred nicknamed ‘Quacky’. The family at the time lived in one of the red brick cottages in Grays Lane.

William John Swain, son of Walter, grandson of William was nicknamed ‘Baker Bill’, He started work on Charlie Weston’s farm working with the horses but later went to work at Berrills bakehouse, getting up early to bake the bread and later deliver it. A shy man, his first invitation to Gladys to go out with him was written on a piece of a flour bag and handed over with the bread.

SWAINS by Brenda Pittam

The first Yardley Gobion Swain I met was Eric, who at 11 years old, with 60 others, including myself, started at Towcester Grammar school. I had never heard of the village where he came from and had no idea that I was to spend most of my adult life there let alone take an interest in the Swains of Yardley Gobion. It was their strange nicknames that sparked my interest – Quacky, Joyful and Baker Bill. Why nicknames? Well there were so many Swain children in the village in the period 1915-1925 that people would say they are Quacky’s or Joyful’s to define which family they belonged to, as both Quacky and Joyful were called Fred. These were just two of the many families of the early 20th century.

So I set out to find how all these Swains were related, bound to be, I said to myself, not knowing that I would find two sets of cousins marrying within the village. The result makes a wonderful large tree, all of these Swains going back to one couple, John Swain and Ann Holman born about 1791 and married in 1810. I believe, but have not yet proved that John had a brother Richard born 1775 as he was living as a lodger with John’s widow in 1851. The name Richard appears in following generations.

Below is the genealogy report from this tree which is the easiest way to present it, as the tree is too large to reproduce here. I cannot guarantee every fact is correct but it is to the best of my knowledge. If you know I have made mistakes please contact me with details. If you have details of marriages of those in the report that I have not been able to confirm please let me know. ( Click on my name at the top to email )

I would like to thank all those people related to the Swains of Yardley Gobion for their help and photographs. Being able to talk or correspond with relatives and look at old photographs has been a great help. If you would like one of your ancestor Swain’s pictures to be added here then email me with your picture, address for Brenda at the top of this writing.

Notes for ALBERT OR HORACE SWAIN:

Horace appears in the census of 1891 as 6 months old but I was unable to find registration of birth or death under the name Horace. He appears as the son of John and Sarah. Was Horace a pet name for Albert who appears on the Yardley Gobion school admission register in 1900 as born September 1890, along with sister Elsie and brother Dennis having moved from Old Woverton school, he left the next year he was then 11 years old? Elsie and Dennis left in 1903 as did Hilda who, although she had also attended Old Wolverton school started at Yardley 3 months later than the others, it is likely that they moved away from the village again. At the time of the 1901 census Albert appears with his grandparents Richard and Annie a few doors away from his parents’ home, at this time he was recorded as Albert H. so he may have been Albert Horace.
