This indenture made the four and twentieth day of November in the fifteenth year of the reign of our soverign Lord George the second by the grace of Great Britain

France and Ireland King defender of the faith and so forth and in the year of our Lord Christ one thousand seven hundred and forty one between John

Pettitt of Harrold in the county of Bedford servant and son and heir of Thomas Pettitt late of Olney aforesaid chapman deceased and Susanna Pettitt of Olney aforesaid

mother of the said John Pettitt party hereto of the one part and Peter Carey of Olney aforesaid butcher of the other part witnesseth that the said John Pettitt party

paid by the said Peter Carey at or before the sealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof they the said John Pettitt and Susanna Pettitt do hereby acknowledge

and thereof and therefrom and of and from every part and parcel thereof do hereby acquit release and forever discharge the said Peter Carey his heirs executors and administrators and every of them by these

presents have and each of them hath granted released and confirmed and by these presents do and each of them doth grant release and confirm unto the said Peter Carey right title interest use possession property claim and demand whatsoever of them the said John Pettitt and Susanna Pettitt or either of them his heirs and

assigns for ever  in his actual possession and **** in now being by value of a bargain and sale to him made of the same premises for one whole year bearing date the day next before the day of the date

thereof and by force of the statute made and ordained for transferring uses into possession all these several houses or tenements now or late  in the several tenures  or occupations of John Griggs **** Susanna

Pettitt and Elizabeth Saunders widow with their and every of their appurtenances in Olney aforesaid unto the said Peter Carey his heirs and assigns for ever together with all houses and houses barns stables buildings

profits privileges hereditaments and appurtenances whatsoever thereunto belonging or in anywise appertaining and the reversion and reversions remainder and remainders thereof and of every

part and parcel thereof and also all the estate right title interest use possession property claim and demand whatsoever of them the said John Pettitt and Susanna Pettitt or either of them out of in or

unto the same promises or any part or parcel thereof together also with goods writings and evidence touching or relating to the same promises or to any part or parcel thereof to have

and to hold the said several houses or tenements and promises with the hereditaments and appurtenances herein above mentioned to be granted and released there with unto the said Peter

Carey his heirs and assigns to the sole and only use and behoof of the said Peter Carey his heirs and assigns for ever and he said Peter Pettitt and Susanna Pettitt for themselves severally and

respectively and for their several and respective heirs executors and administrators do covenant and agree to and   with the said Peter Carey his heirs and assigns in manner and form following (that is to say

that for and notwithstanding any act matter or thing whatsoever by him her or them or either of them done or suffered to the contrary they and the said John Pettitt and Susanna Pettitt are and stand or one of them

is and standeth lawfully and rightfully seized of and in the same premises with the hereditaments appurtenances and of every part and parcel thereof and in a good **** perfect and absolute indef***

estate of inheritance in fee simple without any manner of conditions limitation or other matter or thing whatsoever to alter change charge or determine the same and also that they now have or one of them

hath full power and absolute authority to grant and convey the same promises in manner and form as aforesaid and also that the said Peter Carey his heirs and assigns shall and lawfully may from time

to time and at all times forever hereafter peaceably and quietly have hold use possess and enjoy the said several houses or tenements and premises with hereditaments and appurtenances hereby granted

and released or intended to be hereby granted and released  with their appurtenances to his and their own use and behoof without the lawful let suit trouble interruption or denial of or by them the said John

Pettitt and Susanna Pettitt or either of them heirs or either of their heirs or assigns or any other person or persons whatsoever claiming or to cause by from or under him her them or either of them

free acquitted and discharged or otherwise well and sufficiently saved harmless and kept indemnified by the said John Pettitt and Susanna Pettitt their heirs executors and administrators

of and from all and all manner of former and other estates gifts grants bargains sales wills mortgages jointures titles troubles charged and **** and made done or suffered or to behold

made done or suffered of and by them the said John Pettitt and Susanna Pettitt (of and by any other) other person or persons whomsoever claiming or to claim by from or under him her or them or either of them

and lastly that they the said John Pettitt and Susanna Pettitt and their heirs and all and every person and persons whomsoever claiming or say*** estate right title or

interest out of in or unto the above granted and released premises or any part or parcel thereof by from or under him or her them or either or any of them shall and with from time to time

at all times hereafter at the **** costs and charges in the law of the said Peter Carey his heirs and assigns do make acknowledge scale **** execute ad suffer or cause or procure to be made done

acknowledged sealed levied executed and suffered all and every such further and other lawful and reasonable act and acts thing and things devise and devises conveyances and assurances in the

law whatsoever for the further better these perfect and absolute conveying settling and confirming of the aforesaid premises and every part thereof with the hereditaments and appurtenances

and upon the said Peter Carey his heirs and assigns forever be it by fine or fines deed or deeds or otherwise howsoever as by the said Peter Carey his heirs or assigns or as his or their counsel be

learned in the law shall be reasonably advised devised and required in witness of the parties aforesaid to these presents indentures interchangeably have set their hands and ****

This indenture made the three and twentieth and day of November in the fifteenth of the reign of

and in the year of our Lord Christ one thousand seven hundred and forty one between John Pettitt of Harrold in the

County of Bedford servant and Susanna Pettitt mother of the said John Pettitt party hereto of the one part and Peter Carey of Olney

in the county of Bucks Butcher  of the other part witnesseth that the said John Pettitt party hereto and the said Susanna

Pettitt for and in consideration  of the sum of five shillings to them or one hand paid by the said Peter Carey at or before the sealing

and delivery hereof the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged they the said John Pettitt and Susanna Pettitt have and each of them

hath granted bargained and sold and by these presents do and each of them doth grant bargain and sell unto the said Peter

Carey his executors administrators and assigns ***** these several houses or tenements now or late in the several tenures occupations

of John Griggs Butcher Susanna Pettitt and Elizabeth Saunders Widow with their hereditaments and appurtenances in Olney aforesaid

unto the said Peter Carey his executors administrators and assigns together with all houses outhouses barns stables buildings profits ****

yards orchards ****  **** hedges ditches trees fences mounds underwoods watercourses ways paths passages easements**

commons commodities and appurtenances whatsoever to the said several houses or tenements hereditaments and premises

belonging  or in anywise appertaining or therewith occupied or enjoyed or accepted repeated*** taken or known  to be as part parcel or member

thereof and the reversion and reversions remainder thereof and of every part and parcel thereof to have

and to hold the said several houses or tenements and premises with the hereditaments and appurtenances herein before granted

bargained and sold unto the said Peter Carey his executors administrators and assigns from the day of the day of the date of these presents

for and during*** and unto the full and term of one **** year from thence next ensuing and **** fully complete and ended ****

yielding and paying for the same promises and rent of one peppercorn only in and upon the feast of Saint Michael the arch****

angel if the same be lawfully demanded to the end and purpose that the said Peter Carey by virtue of thee presents and force of the

statute made for transferring uses into possession maybe in the actual possession of the aforesaid premises with the appurtenances and thereby

may be enabled to accept and take a grant and release of the reversion and inheritance*** thereof to him and his heirs and assigns for

ever in witness whereof the parties aforesaid to these presents indentures interchangeably have sett their hands and seals

City of London, Watchmaker, Jonah Freeman of the City of London, Cutter, and Elizabeth his wife, William Percivall of the towne of

Northampton in the County of Northampton, Gardener, and Susanna his wife late Susanna Freeman, William Glaston of Brayfield on

the Green in the said County of Northampton, Mason, and Mary his wife late Mary Freeman, Elizabeth Freeman of the City of London, Spinster, and Samuel Freeman of the City of London, Cutter, which said James Freeman, Jonah Freeman, Susanna Percivall

Mary Glaston, Elizabeth Freeman and Samuel Freeman are the sons and daughters and devise together with John Freeman of the

City of London, Cutter, and Sarah**** Freeman of Olney in the county of Bucks, Spinster, each of them minors **under as next doc?** the age of one and twenty years of Samuel Freeman

late of Olney aforesaid ***ensure** deceased of the one part and Thomas Pettitt senior of Olney aforesaid, Groom, on the other part **** that the said James Freeman,

Jonah Freeman and Elizabeth his wife, William Percivall and Susanna his wife, William Glaston and Mary his wife, Elizabeth Freeman and Samuel Freeman for and in

consideration of the sum of fifty  pounds of good and lawfull money of Great Britain to the said James Freeman, Jonah Freeman and Elizabeth his wife,

William Peverall and Susanna his wife, William Glaston and Mary his wife, Elizabeth Freeman and Samuel Freeman in hand well and truly paid by the Thomas Pettitt senior

With this year’s warm Summer days and evenings, the number of visitors drawn to ‘Olney’s swimming steps’ at the site of the former ‘Bathing Place’ has increased. This presents an opportunity to re-post Alf Harrison’s image of the Bathing Place from 1948 – a more genteel weekend summer afternoon here.
