Quaker Burials at Hogstye End

New slate Memorial stones were added in 2022.

There are 185 traceable burials made at the Hogstye End (Woburn Sands) Meeting House burial yard over the course of the 278 years that it was fully active.  A key to the sources is listed at the end of this page.  There are likely to have been more, but records are scattered and inconclusive. Given that they come from so many places, the details are inconsistent and sometimes conflicting. The records of burials in the Quaker’s Registers and intermingled with those of Sherington and Leighton Buzzard.

Dates can be particularly difficult, as Quakers used a different system to the rest of England for a long time.  Details can be found here: Quaker Calendar Guide

Owing to the modern usage of the building as a children’s nursery, the Burial Ground has been fenced off and a new entrance cut through the original wall on Hardwick Road.   Access to the Burial Ground can be arranged by applying to the Milton Keynes Quaker Centre in Downhead Park.

Grave marker for Richard Hayllar, a grocer from Newport Pagnell.

There are some sad stories evidenced by the burials. It was a husband and wife who were buried there first, on the same day in 1676; George & Mary Cooper of Wandon (the old name for Wavendon).  Earlier local Quaker burials had taken place in the orchard of William Cook in Bow Brickhill.

Richard Underwood was buried in 1710, having died at Aylesbury Prison, a debtor, imprisoned probably  due to fines imposed for being a Quaker.

The Barnes family of Little Brickhill buried five of their children there, three within 13 days in 1794, no doubt some fearful epidemic that could not be treated at the time. The Quaker’s regular grave-digger buried his own daughter there in 1786, the Quakers no doubt having taken pity on him as the entry is marked “Not of our Society, poor and have relief of the Parish.”

It was then common to re-use names of children who had died, so the Hewlett family buried two Thomas’ and two William’s in 1830-31 and 1839, all only a matter of weeks’ old, with the second set of entries marked “2nd”.

The last two burials were Tyeth & Ellen Spencer in 1951 & 1954. Tyeth wrote a history of the Quaker Meeting House which is available elsewhere on this website.
