PRIVATE HORACE LAWSON

Horace was wounded by two pieces of shrapnel in the neck in August 1916 and recovered in a Sheffield hospital. He had only been in the trenches a fortnight and had been fighting in the Somme district. It had been the 4th Middlesex who fired the first British army shots of the war.
From the Bucks Standard, 24th November, 1917:
“Private Horace Lawson, Middlesex Regt., son of Mr and Mrs Thomas Lawson of Longslade, Woburn Sands, who had latterly been employed as runner, has not been heard of for some time, and several letters marked ‘missing’ have been retuned to his parents. Pte. Lawson was formerly in the employ of Foll and Bawden, auctioneers of Woburn Sands and Bletchley.”
Listed on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Zonnebeke, West Vlaanderen, Belgium. Listed on the Woburn Sands Memorial. His army service papers have not survived.
