Joseph was the youngest son of another Joseph, a draper who had a shop at 49 High Street, Woburn Sands, and Elizabeth. They are also listed as of Hill Farm, Charndon, Bicester.
North Bucks Times, 5th November, 1918: “Died in Egypt. Trooper Joseph Elliot, Westminster Dragoons, died in Egypt on 22nd October from pneumonia. He was the younger son of Mr Joseph Elliot of Gravelly, Hardwick Place, aged 29 years. After a being educated at the Friends School Safron Waldren, he served an apprenticeship with MessersRidgeway and Pledger, Leighton Buzzard and later secured a appointment with Barclays Bank. At the time of his voluntary enlistment in 1915, he was 2nd cashier at Westminster branch. He saw service in Ireland during the rebellion and later with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force. He served at the Irish Rebellion and was in the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force. “
He appears on the Woburn Sands Memorial, as well as the Methodist Memorial, and the Alexandra (Hadra) War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt, where 1700 Commonwealth war dead are listed. His army service papers have not survived.
